Just before the New Year, Epicor participated in the first of a five-part webinar series focusing on the distribution industry. This webinar, and the series as a whole, has detailed and will continue to detail how to beat the competition, and the accomplishments your company could achieve with Epicor Prophet 21, the company’s extensive wholesale distribution software.
Michael Lovelace, Director of Business Development, and Tony Corley, Senior Solution Engineer presented this session. Both presenters are members of the Epicor Distribution Unit.
The Main Points of Discussion During the Webinar
During this webinar, Epicor explained how their wholesale distribution software could help you and your company stand apart from the competition by efficiently and effectively delivering the value-adds your customers need. In this first webinar, they demonstrated:
- How Epicor supports tracking external re-work and processing executed by others, in addition to light manufacturing, assembly, and kitting activities that deliver more value to your customers
- How you can grow your business by delivering customer-first services that solidify relationships, build loyalty, and help you stand apart from the competition
- Epicor’s support for VMI, which ensures a permanent presence and lower risk of being easily replaced
- How to manage consigned stock at customer locations that offers the level of customer engagement, therefore keeping customers happier and helping you differentiate your business
In this blog, we will take a more profound look into what factors enable Epicor Prophet 21 to be the software necessary to beat the competition.

What Sets Epicor Prophet 21 Apart From The Pack
In today’s blog we will review some of the differentiating features of the Epicor Prophet 21 system and how they work together for optimized business processes.
In addition to the areas below, these features also included:
- Quick Entry
- Ease of Use
- Access to Information
Look and Feel
Epicor Prophet 21 utilizes a separate Navigation Pane featuring folders, which have the capability to launch various functions such as Order Entry, Inventory Control, CRM, and Accounting. Through this Navigation Pane, the user can search for specific functions by typing into the search bar, and then launching the search. Each of the functions listed above give way to a series of different modules.
The system’s History Panel allows for very rapid access to information and previously accessed documents, modules, functions. The system’s dashboards feature key information on the specific function they are located inside.
The familiar look and feel of Prophet 21, the convenient productivity ribbon located at the top of the page, and the DynaChange page designer allow for ease-of-use and customization without the need for a specialized programmer.
Mobile POD (Proof of Delivery)
The next major difference of Epicor Prophet 21 is their Mobile POD. Prophet 21’s mobile application can gather the electronic signature from the customer, which is extremely convenient.
One minor drawback to this feature is that Wi-Fi or cell connection is necessary at all times to update the system, and Wi-Fi will not sync up until the driver comes back. However, the user can build their delivery list by selecting orders, routes, or dates, and easily moving orders from one route to another.
After this list is created, each driver has the ability to download the delivery list to his or her cellphone or other mobile device, which makes accessing the data extremely easy. These lists can be broken down by single or multiple orders per stop, so the customer does not have to sign multiple times.
Finally, this mobile signature will seamlessly sync back to Prophet 21. Directions to the specific location are provided in-system. This application not only allows the driver to deliver orders, but also issue return RMA’s and pick up inbound items.
Service & Maintenance
Epicor Prophet 21 features the specific modules necessary to process service quotes and orders, which allows for tracking of serial numbers, keeping tabs on warranty claims, and scheduling labors and technicians. However, serial number tracking does require users to assign a specific serial number to each order.
The system can also suggest upsell preventative maintenance contract opportunities at the item level. If there is work that needs to be done on a machine, the customer can call with the serial number, which will grant them easy access to that specific item’s information. You can then assign tasks to yourself, or in this case, a technician to go and service the machine. Using the customer information and serial number, the user can quickly and accurately create a service order.
Another big win for Epicor’s wholesale distribution system is the light manufacturing add-on capabilities. Prophet 21 has the ability to track assemblies and generate work orders. It also has the capability to handle both assemblies with and without work orders as well as secondary processing needs.
The system knows the ratio of component parts to assemblies, which gives the user the ability to differentiate between producing or purchasing the assembly. All transactions and reporting have an “as of” feature, so all information is available by date range.
The General Ledger module within Prophet is done in real-time. Every time a transaction is completed, its information will be logged. The system captures any and all cost changes with ease, and provides real-time updates.
This feature allows for the tracking of Work-in-Progress and Finished Goods for adjusting the books. Users can easily achieve greater visibility into company performance by utilizing the Accounting Report functions. Each function within the Accounting Report feature allows for many different looks at the company data.
