Transforming Your Business with Manufacturing Technology

Industrial EngineerWe read with interest a recent Wall Street Journal article entitled “How Technology is Transforming US Manufacturing.”   The question and answer format highlights optimism about strong productivity gains and reduced production costs within the US manufacturing sector.

The article notes that “U.S. companies are now leading the world in accelerating product development cycles.” It’s our perception that enterprise software systems help to make these gains possible.

Manufacturing Technology Speeds Product Development

We’ve seen first-hand that when companies use ERP, especially when integrated with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), they are able to speed time to market, while lowering product development and design costs.

When selected and implemented carefully, ERP and other integrated technologies help US manufacturers lower costs, especially as compared to other global markets. When ERP is carefully implemented to streamline the entire manufacturing process – from planning and scheduling, to sequencing and execution — mid-market manufactures can improve efficiencies, lower costs, deliver higher-quality products, and boost margins.

The Power of Data

With advances in manufacturing technology comes more and more data.  The most successful Industries use this data to help make better business decisions and run their business more efficiently.

A key success factor for the companies we work with is to implement ERP in order to better anticipate demand volatility, tightening up a more effective planning process that helps facilitate fast changes

With access to more timely and accurate information, the assumption is that manufacturers use that data to take the needed action to improve business processes. Data helps improve quality, minimize late shipments, reduce inventory, improve customer satisfaction and much more.

Essentially, the goal is to use data to react to change, to maintain better relationships with customers and supply chain partners.

Further Insight

In the work we do with our clients during an ERP selection project, we find that a strategic approach to manufacturing technology lets manufacturers gain sustainable competitive advantages.

Making sense of what’s available in terms of ERP technology is a critical consideration for today’s manufacturer.
