In an effort to keep up to date with the top ERP vendors serving the make to order industry, Ultra Consultants hosts our Make to Order Webinar Series twice per year. Last week marked the conclusion of our January series, in which six of the top vendors participated. In this blog, we will dive into what we learned about the Epicor Make to Order ERP software.
Epicor By The Numbers
In the past year, Epicor racked in some record-breaking numbers. They earned nearly $1 billion in revenues, clocked in 4,600 employees in 150 countries, and served 35,000 customers supported by 400 global partners. Focusing on the mid-market, Epicor is the sixth largest ERP system in the world.
Diving Into the Epicor Make to Order ERP Software Technology
Because technology and reliability are important for them, the Epicor make to order ERP software is 100% based on the Microsoft stack. This provides a high level of stability in the system and minimizes the need to find add-on apps. Epicor has moved aggressively into the use of tools to support social apps. In addition, Epicor make to order ERP software dashboards, with their tile-based structure, have a very Windows-like feel. This makes for easy navigation from screen to screen using commands and key strokes that are readily familiar.
Epicor’s strategy is to focus on a fully embedded system rather than an integrated system. An integrated system introduces more risk when doing system upgrades.
Opportunity to Quote and Workflows in the Epicor Make to Order ERP Software
The Opportunity/Quote screen offers the potential to load a wealth of information. A user can utilize the “quick quote” function to rapidly load a quote for an existing product or an existing customer. For new customers, Workflows can be created to focus quote development tasks to a specific role or person. The ability to send quote development tasks to individuals with the best fitting skill set is a very powerful tool.
Another tool that supports the Epicor make to order ERP software Workflow feature is the ability to create a “part on the fly,” that is, creating a new item for use in a quotation without adding this item to the item master. Many systems lack this tool. Creating a workflow like this is a relatively straight-forward task which uses English definitions rather than complex software code. The multiple menu bars at the top of each screen provides access to many more screens and the exact location within a screen better than a typical system.
Planner’s Workbench and Task Reporting
Next, the Planner’s Workbench feature in the Epicor make to order ERP software was discussed. This is a job entry screen which provides an easy reference to the Sales Order, along with other information. This feature allows production standards to be stated in several different methods, i.e. pieces/hour or minutes/piece. This is a helpful piece of functionality. The Epicor make to order ERP software also has a Job Traveller feature, which can be developed using a significant amount of flexibility through the options chosen.
The Epicor make to order ERP software also touts a Weldment Kanban monitor, which provides a view into a supplying work cell. This tool provides this view into the supplier work cell to determine if this cell can deliver the needed components. If the planned consumption will require a production Kanban signal, the system will then generate a recommendation to the supplying work cell or a purchase order. This tool will be very helpful if your firm is implementing lean manufacturing techniques.
The Task Reporting capability includes an auto-fill feature, which speeds up the required time for a user to enter their data. The feature also has the ability to add visual specification and inspection criteria, which is definitely a plus.
The Epicor make to order ERP software provides both an on-premise and a SaaS-type deployment option for its customers. Their SaaS ERP option does account for both a single or multi-tenant mode. The security is secure, but in a multi-tenant environment every client is upgraded at the same time, which is a cost effective approach.
